Chamarel - Mauritus Island - 1997
NESTLED IN THE PICTORIAL CHAMAREL VALLEY,
LAY A FORGOTTEN LAND...
In the heart of the Chamarel village, perched 350-400 meters above sea level and just a stone’s throw from Mauritius’s glittering beaches, lay an abandoned plot of land. Forgotten for over fifty years, it was overrun with dense undergrowth, creepers, Ravenala palms, and spiny Loulou bushes, impenetrable even to the sun. In 1996, this land went up for sale, but with no road access, water, or electricity, and situated far from the popular coastal areas, it attracted no buyers.
Yet, what others saw as an overlooked piece of wilderness, we saw as potential. Despite the doubts of friends and colleagues, we embraced the challenge, acquiring the property and affectionately naming it 'Jurassic.' It became the canvas for our vision.

PLANTING THE SEEDS OF LAKAZ CHAMAREL...In 1998, we began crafting what would one day become Lakaz Chamarel Exclusive Lodge.

FOUNDATIONS OF A DREAM: THE FIRST STRUCTURE AT LAKAZ CHAMAREL
In 1999, we built our family house to use on weekends and holidays. Initially, it had two bedrooms and two bathrooms, which today serve as the guest relations office and reservation area. The living room, still featuring its original fireplace, remains unchanged, while the kitchen and dining area have been integrated into our restaurant. Little by little, the property began to transform, and so did our ideas.

FROM FIRST FOUNDATIONS TO PRIVATE VILLAS AT LAKAZ CHAMAREL
The idea of opening our property to travellers from around the world and sharing our treasure materialised in 2004, with the construction of our first three rooms: 'Feraye', 'Dibois', and 'Bambou'.

Lakaz Chamarel has transformed from humble beginnings into a must-visit destination in Mauritian tourism, offering privileged access to the island's unique natural beauty and rich heritage.
The Chamarel region itself has also undergone a remarkable evolution, blossoming from a once little-known area into an essential part of our island, celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes and commitment to nature conservation and species protection.
What began with the planting of a few seeds has flourished into a lush paradise. Today, travelers from around the world find refuge under the shade of trees we have nurtured, surrounded by vibrant plants that showcase nature's diversity.
The garden at Lakaz Chamarel has become one of the most beautiful in Mauritius—a haven for endemic trees and birds, reflecting our deep commitment to preserving Earth's natural wonders.
"Lakaz," meaning "home" in Creole, embodies our dedication to creating a serene retreat where travelers can reconnect with nature.
Our "Lakaz Go Green" initiative is at the heart of our philosophy, ensuring that sustainability and environmental stewardship resonate in every aspect of our operations.

The food was amazing - there was a different menu with choices every evening and a lovely breakfast. The room was beautiful, and the outdoor shower was wonderful. Everything was clean, tidy, and really well maintained.
Everything at Lakaz Chamarel was wonderful and we had a perfect stay there. The hotel is situated in a valley and it feels like you're tucked away in a little bit of paradise, with all of the trees, plants and bats alongside the beautiful buildings and facatevand also wen
All in all we had a perfect time at Lakaz Chamarel and couldn't have asked for anything more.

We’ve stayed in many hotels around the world and can honestly say that this was our very favourite! I have absolutely nothing negative to say as it was all perfect from beginning to end. We stayed in a garden suite which was amazing- we couldn’t believe it was all for us! The staff were so friendly and attentive without being over the top and we felt so looked after. We loved cocktails at the sunset bar and warming our toes by the fire pit. A walk to the rum distillery was a great way to spend a morning and we enjoyed the shuttle bus trip down to the beach. We were here for 3 nights and didn’t want to leave!

What a remarkable place! Had the pleasure of staying at the Piton Canot suite which had the most amazing view. The perfect spot for any sunset lovers. This place is very peaceful and unique. The staff here are very friendly, welcoming and always willing to help in any way they can. Special shout out to our favourite staff member - RAJEEV who made our trip even more special. Always taking the time to say hello and share the culture and history with us. Rajeev, we love you!
